Privacy policy

Your snags stay
on your phone.

01Who we are

Hairline is a snagging app for new-build homes, made by Orleden. In this policy, “we” and “us” means Orleden, and “the app” means the Hairline app for Android and the web version of it.

This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the app and this website. It’s written to be read in a few minutes; if anything is unclear, get in touch.

02What stays on your phone

Everything you put into Hairline is saved in the app’s own storage on your phone, and nowhere else. That includes:

  • HomesNames, addresses, developer and homeowner names, the developer’s email address, completion and warranty dates.
  • SnagsTitles, details, rooms, categories, statuses, dates, pins and the marks you draw on photos.
  • PhotosThe photos you take or choose, resized copies of them and their thumbnails.
  • ChecklistsWhich checks you’ve ticked, and any checks you’ve added.
  • ReportsThe PDF reports and chase-up letters you create, and their history.
  • SettingsYour preferences, such as reminder settings and the last report format you used.

We have no copy of any of it and no way to see it. Deleting a home in the app deletes its snags, photos and reports. Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored on your phone.

03What we collect

Through the app, nothing. Hairline has no account, no servers that receive your data, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising and no advertising identifiers. We don’t sell, rent or share information about you, because we don’t have any.

The only time we receive personal information is if you contact us, for example through the form on our website. That’s covered in If you contact us.

04Permissions the app asks for

Each permission is asked for only when you first use the feature that needs it, and you can say no. The rest of the app keeps working.

  • CameraTo take photos of snags. Photos are saved inside the app, not sent anywhere.
  • PhotosTo choose existing photos, through Android’s photo picker. The app only sees the photos you pick.
  • MicrophoneOnly if you use dictation, and only while you’re speaking. Your phone’s speech recognition service turns speech into text. Many phones do this on the device; others may send the audio to that service’s provider (usually Google) to recognise it, under their own privacy policy. Hairline keeps only the text, never the audio.
  • NotificationsFor reminders about warranty checks, snags waiting on the developer and backups. Reminders are scheduled on your phone; nothing is sent from a server.
  • TorchTo turn on your phone’s light from a checklist. This switches the light only and doesn’t use the camera.

05When information leaves your phone

Only when you send it. When you share a report, a spreadsheet, a chase-up email or a backup, Android’s share menu opens and you choose where it goes: an email app, a messaging app, Google Drive or anywhere else. From then on, that app and the people you send it to handle it under their own terms.

The developer’s email address you add is used only to fill in the “To” line of chase-up emails you choose to send.

06Backups

You can save a backup file of everything in Hairline from Home details. The file is saved wherever you choose, such as Google Drive or your phone’s storage, and anyone with the file can open it, so keep it somewhere private.

If your phone’s own backup is turned on, Android may also include Hairline’s data in the backup it keeps in your Google account. That backup belongs to your Google account; we can’t access it. You can turn it off in your phone’s settings.

07Purchases

If you buy Hairline, the payment is handled entirely by Google Play. Google processes your payment details under its own privacy policy; we never see them. The app only receives confirmation from Google Play that the purchase was made.

Installing apps from Google Play also means Google collects some information, such as installs and app usage, under the Google privacy policy.

08This website

This website doesn’t use cookies, analytics or advertising. Everything on it, including its fonts, is served from this site, so your browser doesn’t connect to any other company when you visit. Like any website, our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running.

If you use the web version of Hairline, your snags and photos are stored in your browser on that device, in the same way as the app stores them on your phone. Clearing your browser’s site data deletes them.

09If you contact us

If you use the contact form on our website or email us, we receive your name, your email address, the topic you chose and your message. The form sends these to our inbox by email.

We use them only to reply to you and help with your question, which is in our legitimate interest and yours. We don’t add you to a mailing list or share your details with anyone. We keep the conversation for up to 12 months after it ends, then delete it, unless we need it longer to deal with a problem you’ve reported.

To stop spam, the website briefly keeps a scrambled (one-way hashed) form of the IP address a message was sent from, for up to an hour.

10Children

Hairline is made for adults buying or living in a new-build home. It isn’t intended for anyone under 18.

11Your rights

Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018) you have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, and to have it corrected or deleted. As we don’t collect or hold any, there’s normally nothing for us to give you or delete, but you’re welcome to ask.

You’re always in control of the information in the app: you can edit or delete any snag or home at any time, or uninstall the app to remove everything.

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled a privacy question, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

12Changes to this policy

If the app starts working differently, for example by adding an optional online feature, we’ll update this policy and the date at the top before that change goes live. If a change affects how your information is handled, we’ll tell you in the app.
